Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (JPEC) Internship (Winter, Paid)

The Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (JPEC) is seeking an intern to assist with the evaluation of judges and the upcoming legislative session.

JPEC uses surveys, courtroom observation, and other data collection efforts to evaluate the performance of judges for voters. It is now completing evaluations for judges who are eligible for the ballot in 2024. Completed evaluations will be reviewed by commissioners in an intensive, six-month deliberative process. Interns will help prepare reports for review, complete data entry, and help support commission meetings, including online voting. During this same time period, the Utah Legislature will hold its 2024 General Session. The intern will help to track relevant legislation and may attend hearings if legislation involving JPEC comes up.

By participating in the internship, the intern will gain:

  • Knowledge of the judiciary and the evaluation process for Utah judges,
  • Experience in performance evaluations,
  • Skills in Salesforce,
  • Data management and some qualitative analysis skills, and

This intern should be prepared to work in a small team environment, be self-motivated, organized, enthusiastic, and possess good communication skills (both oral and written). Precision and detail orientation are critical, and the intern must be able keep information confidential, as required by state law. Hours are flexible (to accommodate school and holidays) and can mostly be performed remotely, if desired. Commission meetings usually occur on Tuesday mornings.

This position can start as early as December 1 with flexibility during the holidays. By January 2024, the position will become 20-25 hours per week. $16/hour.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Salesforce, or another CRM, and Excel skills
  • A keen eye for detail and error correction
  • Team player
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing
  • Ability to manage confidential information with care and discretion
  • Reliable, self-motivated, organized
