Housing Program and Policy Research Internship

Salt Lake City’s Department of Community and Neighborhoods (CAN) is implementing two housing plans: Housing SLC, our five-year moderate-income housing plan; and Thriving in Place, our anti-displacement plan. CAN is seeking an intern that is interested in local government’s role in housing to further the commitments made in those two housing plans. This position will help research, develop, and implement strategies and actions to further the City’s commitments made in the two housing plans.

To qualify students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform, be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, be familiar with standard computer programs such as Word and Excel, be self-motivated, and have good organizational and analytic skills. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period. Incumbents may deal with confidential information, which is expected to be maintained as confidential and shared only on a need-to-know basis with City employees and elsewhere when authorized by the intern’s city supervisor.

About the Team:

You will be working with the CAN Policy Director and Program & Policy Manager to conduct research, develop and implement strategies and actions to further affordable housing strategies, such as Community Land Trusts, community benefit agreements, and more. You will also work with the Housing Stability team, one of six divisions within the CAN Department.

Work Schedule:

This position requires an average of 20 hours per week for 3 to 4 months. Work may be completed remotely with some in-person meetings with City staff.

Position Salary Range: $15.00/hr. to $20.00/hr.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts literature reviews and research of best practices related to the housing strategies outlined in the City’s housing plans, such as developing Community Land Trusts, tenant resource and navigation services, and home equity conversion programs.
  • Develops recommendations to City staff on possible actions to implement said housing plan strategies.
  • Writes or drafts emails, internal memoranda, articles, or related material based on research, investigation, or analysis.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Complies with city and department policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, though summer internships may not require concurrent enrollment if student is in good standing with the educational institution.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must have good organizational and analytical skills.
  • Must have good computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in research methods, analysis, and communication.
  • Interest in housing policy and passion for solving social problems.
  • A willingness to learn from others and to contribute to conversations.
