Education:

This past winter semester, Landon Durtschi (BA in Philosophy, Class of 2023), interned with ExBerliner, the largest English-language news media outlet in Berlin. Listen to him share his experience in this regard and also hear what students on the program have to say about their living arrangements in the heart of Berlin next to the Brandenburg Gate.

Fall semester is an ideal time of year to intern for several reasons: 1) vacation season has ended, and people are focused on their work; 2) fall temperatures make housing without air conditioning (typically the case throughout Europe) comfortable; and 3) you’ll be competing with fewer students for internship opportunities.

To apply, simply go to https://kennedy.byu.edu/isp-apply and select the program and semester (Fall 2023). Although the final application deadline for fall semester is August 1, the sooner you apply the better so that we can begin the process of matching you with a company or organization that fits your academic and professional interests. Also, all participants enroll in a 1.0 credit summer-term prep course (IAS 369R) held over Zoom, so applying sooner than later simplifies instruction and information dissemination.

Once admitted, you'll receive a program-specific application, resume template, and cover letter template, which help to flesh out your profile and place you in a suitable internship. In-country directors in Berlin and Riga will schedule a time to meet with you over Zoom to discuss your application and possible providers that align with your interests.

Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Federal Insured Student Loans, and Pell Grants can be applied to these programs. If you submit the financial aid section of the International Study Programs (ISP) application and have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB), you’ll be considered for an ISP scholarship. Humanities majors who complete the preparation course and register for International Internship credit qualify for a College of Humanities program discount that ranges from $1500–3000, depending on their FAFSA score; Humanities minors receive half support. Beyond that, if finances preclude your being able to participate in an international internship, consider applying for the Kennedy Center Global Opportunity Scholarship https://kennedy.byu.edu/globalopportunity, which funds up to $5,000.

Please feel free to email Tony Brown, the program director, at tony_brown@byu.edu and/or stop by his office (3113 JFSB) to discuss these programs and any questions you may have.
