Student Writer/Editor

This position is for a part-time student editorial assistant at the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. The successful candidate will work with the editorial supervisor, assistant dean, and communications and external relations team to communicate the college’s programs, events, research, student spotlights, faculty highlights, successes, and more to internal and external audiences.
  

Responsibilities include writing and editing articles for the college’s alumni magazine and news webpage; interviewing students, faculty, and staff; participating in weekly team and writers’ meetings; meeting strict article and draft deadlines; and creating and publishing copy for the college’s web pages. 

Starting Wage: $14-$16/hour DOE 

Essential functions: 

  • Search out stories in the college and interview faculty, staff, and students about research, events, experiential learning, news, and accomplishments in the college.
  • Write articles for the alumni magazine and website to tell the great stories and successes in the college that align with BYU’s messaging and themes.
  • Edit articles and other written content to ensure it meets audience self-interests and that the college’s key messages are effectively communicated. 
  • Proofread written materials to detect and correct errors using spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, AP and Chicago Style, and the college's style guide.  
  • Verify facts, dates, research, and statistics in drafted articles.
  • Work with editorial supervisor, assistant dean, and communications and external relations team on polishing and publishing final projects and articles.
  • Prepare press releases for upcoming college lectures, events, and news.
  • Assist with college events as needed.
  • Participate in additional department projects as requested. 

Required skills: 

  • A strong knowledge of how to write and edit in English, and the ability to communicate well to a specific audience on behalf of a brand.
  • Have an aptitude for learning new things and an ability to follow through with multiple tasks and deadlines quickly with a professional demeanor.
  • Must be dependable, self-directed, professional, well-organized, skilled in time management, able to prioritize tasks efficiently, and able to communicate clearly and respectfully with others. 
  • Must be comfortable writing in a journalistic format and using AP and Chicago Style.
  • College course experience in creative writing, journalism, public relations, or advertising is preferred.
