Office of Diversity Affairs Communication Intern

JOB SUMMARY

The successful candidate will support the Office Diversity & Inclusion work with community outreach and communications. The internship is specifically designed for candidates with a strong interest in government and policy with skills in communications, social media, written and oral communication. In addition to the county-level work, the internship will also expose interns to state, federal, and grassroots work.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion oversees a range of policy initiatives, special projects, programs, and partnerships, including the Council on Diversity Affairs (C.O.D.A.), that help achieve the Mayor’s vision for the greater Salt Lake metropolitan area. We work with local government and with private sector, non-profit sector, and grassroots partners to develop collective action around regional challenges, challenge entrenched social inequities, and identify unique opportunities to maximize the public good.

This is a paid internship; the intern will receive $12.00/hour and can work up to 205 hours during the term. Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. There may be occasional work on the weekends.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should be self-motivated. Students with a focus in Communication, Social Sciences, Political Science, International Relations, Behavioral Science, or Humanities are preferred; but all applicants are welcome. Preferred candidates will have completed sophomore-level status in a bachelor’s degree program OR be enrolled in a graduate degree program.

Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Proficient in graphic design, primarily using Canva and Adobe. Social media platform experience and knowledge are also a plus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Assist in oversight of outreach work, including updating important contact lists.
    • Assist with drafting communication pieces, including e-newsletter and official statements.
    • Research events and resources throughout the county, especially those tailored for diverse populations.
    • Update information on the C.O.D.A. website and posts on social media.
    • Compose general letters, spreadsheets, e-mail, and memoranda from rough drafts or general instructions.
    • Design social media posts and newsletter elements.
    • Assist the Diversity and Inclusion team with social media strategy and outreach.
    • Manage social media accounts for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
    • Assist with the development of press releases, the execution of press conferences, and other communications related activities.
    • Participate in the Internship Leadership events, which are most often luncheons and workshops with leaders from within the County. The purpose of these events is to help interns build leadership skills and to provide networking opportunities.

Office for New Americans – Communications Intern

JOB SUMMARY

Salt Lake County is a welcoming community, open to all. Our rapid growth includes many foreign-born residents who now call the county home. To ensure that New Americans feel welcome and supported, the Salt Lake County Office for New Americans was established in 2016. Its goal is to improve the lives of Salt Lake County’s New American residents by maximizing their civic, social, and economic potential. This is accomplished by connecting New Americans to resources to help them thrive and feel welcomed here.

The successful candidate will support the Office for New Americans’ work with community outreach and communications. The internship is specifically designed for candidates with strong interest in a government and policy with skills in communications, social media, written and oral communication. In addition to the county-level work, the internship will also expose interns to state, federal, and grassroots work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates who study in a related field and are self-motivated will be considered. Must have an interest in working to advance the welfare of residents with immigrant or refugee background. Basic English writing skills and computer knowledge are required. Second language a plus, but not required. Students with a focus in Social Sciences, Political Science, International Studies, and Business are preferred; but all applicants are welcome. Have obtained at least sophomore status (30+ credit hours) in a Bachelor degree program OR be enrolled in a Graduate degree program.

Communications and Community Relations Internship

JOB SUMMARY

The successful candidate will support the Office of Initiatives and Special Projects work with community outreach and communications. The internship is specifically designed for candidates with a strong interest in government and policy with skills in communications, social media, and writing. In addition to the county-level work, the internship will also expose interns to state, federal, and local work.

The Office of Mayor’s Initiatives and Special Projects oversees a range of policy initiatives, special projects, programs, and partnerships, and funding collaborations that help achieve the Mayor’s vision for the greater Salt Lake metropolitan area. We work with local governments and with national, state, and private sector partners to develop collective action around regional challenges, entrenched social problems, and unique opportunities to maximize the public good. This currently includes policy initiatives on homelessness and housing, which will be the focus of this internship.

Public Policy & Communications Intern (Jan-April)

The Public Policy and Communications Intern will be an integral part of YWCA Utah’s Policy Team and will support advocacy efforts during the 2024 Utah Legislative General Session. The position will run from January through April 2024. The Public Policy and Communications Intern will have the opportunity to effect meaningful policy change, gain experience in nonprofit policy advocacy, and make valuable connections among community and state leaders.

HEAL Utah Legislative Internship (Stipend)

The Legislative Intern works closely with the Community Engagement Manager and HEAL Utah staff to promote renewable energy and protect Utah from dirty air and toxic waste. Most of the Legislative Interns’ responsibilities will include work at the Utah State Capitol during the legislative session and outreach and research.
