Applications are now open for summer internships at the Utah State Archives and Records Service! These competitive, stipend-paid internships are designed especially for students. Read more about our four internship opportunities:

Digital Preservation Internship

  • Join our Digital Initiatives team and gain hands-on experience in digitization and digital preservation! This in-person internship offers the opportunity to work with historical records by helping capture and process the 1972 Utah death certificates for online access. You’ll learn the fundamentals of archival imaging, metadata creation, and digital preservation while contributing to an essential public resource. In addition to hands-on digitization work, interns will receive mentorship in best practices for handling fragile records, quality control, and long-term digital stewardship.

Archives History Research Internship

  • Help us document the history of the Utah Division of Archives and Records Service! This in-person internship is an opportunity to dive into historical research and contribute to a professionally produced booklet detailing the history of the Archives, its programs, leadership, and impact. Intern will focus on specific sections of the booklet, conducting research in our collections and writing a 500–1000 word history for each section based on primary sources. Along the way, you’ll gain hands-on experience with archival research, citation practices, and formal historical writing. Mentorship in research methods, writing, and editorial processes is included, and interns will receive credit for their contributions to the final publication.

Local Government Records Accessioning Internship (x2)

  • Spend the summer with the Local Government team! This in-person internship consists of working with staff in accessioning newly acquired historical records into the Archives permanent collection. You’ll have the opportunity to learn the accessioning framework applied at the State Archives and gain hands-on experience in identifying, organizing, inventorying, housing, and describing a variety of records from local governments in Utah.
