News Writer (134321)

As the News Writer for the BYU Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering, you will uncover compelling stories and craft engaging articles that showcase engineering students, faculty, and alumni. You will also collaborate with a communications team and report to the Communications Manager as you help write and copyedit content for the College. Take your passion for storytelling to the forefront of engineering in this exciting role!
Primary duties include:
-Seeking out stories, researching topics, and pursuing news lead submissions
-Scheduling and conducting interviews
-Writing captivating and relevant news stories for engineering.byu.edu/news
-Working with photographers and designers to supplement written material with visual content
-Managing website article analytics
-Writing and copyediting content for College website, digital displays, newsletters,
YouTube videos, etc.
-Staying up-to-date with industry trends and College happenings
-Contributing to other communications team projects as needed
Desired skills and experience:
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Understanding of AP style and "inverted pyramid" writing
-Willingness to independently develop ideas instead of waiting for assignments
-Ability to manage multiple projects and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
-Willingness to incorporate others' ideas and take feedback with grace
-Proficiency in Google platforms such as Analytics, Drive, Sheets, Forms, etc.
-Ability to ask the "right" questions and research unfamiliar topics
-Ability to decipher "news worthiness"
-Ability to distill complex technical topics into understandable prose

Writing samples in any format-(press releases, news stories, magazine articles, research papers, etc.) are welcome. Most interested in samples featuring attention-grabbing headlines and strong leads.
Employee class: Student Part-Time (up to 20 hours/wk fall/winter, up to 40 hours/wk
spring/summer)
Desired start date: ASAP

Work location: Engineering Building - BYU campus (and remote, on occasion)
Pay: $14.25-$17/hr, depending on experience/portfolio

Social Media Manager (134322)

As the Social Media Manager for the BYU Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering, you will create exciting, professional, creative content for social media platforms as you collaborate with a communications team and report to the Communications Manager. This includes conducting campaigns, contests, giveaways, takeovers, live streams, and more. You will also track and measure social media performance to guide your strategy and understand your various audiences. How will you take @byuengineering to the next level?
Primary duties include:
- Creating, scheduling, and posting content for social media (writing copy, taking photos,
creating graphics when needed)
- Working with writers, graphic designers, and videographers to promote college
happenings
- Maintaining a social media editorial calendar
- Analyzing social media analytics and creating monthly performance reports
- Conducting contests, giveaways, takeovers, live streams, and other creative initiatives you invent
- Identifying unique needs of each audience (alumni, students, faculty, staff, donors, and friends of the college)
- Interacting directly with audience via social channels (responding to comments, messages, etc.)
- Staying up-to-date with social media trends and brainstorming new ideas
- Connecting with relevant brands, companies, and organizations
- Contributing to other communications team projects as needed
- Desired skills and experience:
- Experience managing social media
- Willingness to independently develop ideas instead of waiting for assignments
- Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner
- Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and deadlines
- Willingness to incorporate others' ideas and take feedback with grace
- Proficiency in Google platforms such as Analytics, Drive, Sheets, Forms, etc.
- Experience working with internal and external analytics platforms (e.g. Facebook
Insights, Hootsuite)
- Excellent organization

Editorial Intern, Salt Lake Magazine

Interns will assist the editorial team with producing print and digital content. Responsibilities may include writing original articles, assisting members of the editorial team on research and story preparation, editing others’ work, uploading print articles on WordPress, taking photos and drafting social media posts. The internship can be tailored to the individual goals and interests of the student. Any intern who is interested will be published in one of our three magazines.

Social Media Intern/Volunteer

We are looking for a well-organized, self-motivated, reliable and committed person to help with our social media accounts. As a social media intern or volunteer, you will focus on supporting UVR’s advocacy strategy and campaigns by researching relevant content and creating new content to publish to UVR's Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok accounts. You will work with a team responsible for image selection, caption and content writing, and some photography at UVR events. You will also be communicating to the public via answering DMs. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with a professional staff in an enthusiastic, community-based non-profit organization.
