Part-time Paid Church History Research Intern (BYU Students Only)

Church History

The Research and Outreach Division of the Church History Department produces material to help God’s children become more aware of Church history and inspired to follow Jesus Christ. This role works under the direction of the Church Historian and Recorder to adapt historical content for specific audiences and distribution channels. Due to the nature of this internship this posting is for currently enrolled BYU students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under the direction of department staff, research events in contemporary Church history in the Church History Library and third-party collections.
  • Summarize sources pertaining to the topics assigned, reporting on locations searched, items found and not found. Evaluate the reliability and significance of each source as it relates to the topic and the project objectives.
  • Verify facts, dates, and statistics using the Church History Library collection and other standard reference sources.
  • Work in the Church History Library in Salt Lake City at least two days each week for a period of 12 weeks
  • This internship is graciously underwritten by the BYU Council on Religious Endeavors (CORE). The successful candidate will be required to write a report submitted to CORE summarizing activities at the conclusion of the internship.

QUALIFICATIONS

Paid Interns are qualified while enrolled at Brigham Young University (BYU) pursing a graduate or post-graduate degree studying history, social science, humanities, or a closely related field and for one year following graduation. Other qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated interest in and familiarity with Latter-day Saint history
  • Demonstrated ability to research history in primary and secondary sources, particularly the Church History catalog, and to critically evaluate information and claims in sources
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely with a knowledge of the standards in The Chicago Manual of Style
  • Detail oriented with demonstrated organizational and planning skills and a track record of meeting deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills and a track record of effective collaboration
  • Demonstrated facility with office productivity software (word processors, spreadsheets)
  • Able to travel to the Church History Library and work there at least two days each week for a period of 12 weeks

Energy Pathway Internship (PAID)

The Utah Office of Energy Development (OED) is seeking an Energy Pathways Intern to join the State Energy Program (SEP) team. The intern will help advance energy initiatives throughout the state of Utah via education, collaboration, research, and outreach. OED’s mission is to advance Utah's energy and mineral economy to ensure affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for Utahns by supporting the Governor’s vision of energy in the state. The ideal candidate has strong skills in writing, research, and collaboration as well as a desire to effect positive change on the energy landscape in the state. Interns will report to the State Energy Program Manager. This position will work 20 hours per week and will be paid $15 per hour for a term not to exceed 4 months. Hybrid telework options are available.
