Community Outreach Intern Hourly

The Community Outreach Internship provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the internal organization and operations of the Mayor’s Office. This job is designed to provide students with paid professional experience to further their education and training and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit. To qualify students must be enrolled in an accredited school program related to the type of work they are expected to perform. Positions will terminate upon completion of the internship period. Incumbents may deal with confidential information, which is expected to be maintained as confidential and shared only on a need-to-know basis with city employees and elsewhere when authorized by the intern’s designated city supervisor.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Collects data and reviews research materials, determines accuracy and validity of sources and appropriateness for use.
  • Designs, develops, and conducts a variety of research projects; determines appropriate methodologies, information sources, sampling strategies, and data-collection tools, etc.
  • Performs research activities by utilizing computer software to obtain and manipulate data.
  • Writes or drafts technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Complies with city and department policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the planning, organization and delivery of community outreach events and activities
  • Execute volunteer related initiatives for Love Your Block and the Mayor’s SLC Corps.
  • Engage in community outreach through attending/tabling at community events, door to door canvassing, compiling newsletters, social media posts and other creative tactics.
  • Design, develop, and conduct a variety of research projects; determine appropriate methodologies, information sources, sampling strategies and data-collection tools
  • Work on special projects and assist in planning events.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Constituent Liaison Team Intern

Students who have a strong interest in learning about municipal government and public policy and possess strong accountability, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, and interpersonal skills are encouraged to apply. Spanish or other second language fluencies, including American sign language, are a plus.The office of the Salt Lake City Council is looking for interns to take on a supporting role helping Council Members achieve their goals helping the community, by directly assisting them over the internship period, providing the intern with a learning experience on how local government and constituent services work. In this role, the interns will work with the City Council Liaison team and directly assist Council Members. Each intern position would be directly assigned to a specific Council Member, would get to know district-specific issues on an in-depth basis, and would assist the Council Member in tracking and helping address those issues. It could include some clerical and scheduling assistance and semi-regular evening and weekend meetings.

This position is key to supporting and will be integrated with the Council Liaison team and would support this team in any way that helps the Council Member achieve their legislative goals and help their community. This team performs constituent relations for Council Members by addressing and monitoring resident requests for service regarding a wide range of municipal topics and interests, assists Council Members to achieve their legislative goals, plans community and town hall meetings, and works with members of the administration, the public, and local organizations. The City Council Liaison team also supports Council Members in their transparency efforts for the public to stay informed on issues that affect Council Member’s district; expands visibility of the Salt Lake City Council by writing articles and information content for the production of City Council District newsletters, social media platforms, and other communication platforms; provides assistance with video productions; tracks policy issues. 

Sustainability Intern: Part-Time

This position will close April 3, 2024.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Assists with all aspects of marketing and outreach related to the Department’s programs and mission.
  • Researches and writes articles for the SLCgreen blog covering a wide range of sustainability and environmental topics.
  • Assists with content creation for SLCgreen website and social media.
  • Serve as a primary point person for staffing the SLCgreen booth during community tabling events (several events per semester in Fall and Winter/Spring. Tabling becomes the primary focus of the internship in the Summer program).
  • Analyzing, recommending changes, and developing creative outreach material to promote sustainability initiatives with different audiences
  • As needed, intern may also undertake a research project for the Department. This includes designing, developing, and conducting research, determining appropriate methodology, information sources, sampling strategies, and data-collection tools.
  • Writes or drafts technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.
  • Performs communication and research activities by utilizing computer software.
  • Other tasks as assigned and as based on student’s background, academic goals, and interests.
