The Utah Office of Energy Development (OED) is seeking an Energy Pathways Intern to join the State Energy Program (SEP) team. The intern will help advance energy initiatives throughout the state of Utah via education, collaboration, research, and outreach. OED’s mission is to advance Utah's energy and mineral economy to ensure affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for Utahns by supporting the Governor’s vision of energy in the state. The ideal candidate has strong skills in writing, research, and collaboration as well as a desire to effect positive change on the energy landscape in the state. Interns will report to the State Energy Program Manager. This position will work 20 hours per week and will be paid $15 per hour for a term not to exceed 4 months. Hybrid telework options are available.

The Energy Pathways Intern will work within the State Energy Program (SEP) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Some of our SEP programs include Energy Efficiency, Dark Skies, Transmission, Distributed Energy Resources, Coal, Oil, & Gas, Education & Workforce Training, Electric Vehicle Transportation Infrastructure & Deployment, Emergency Planning, Communication & Outreach, Policy Analysis, and more. This position offers valuable insight into the complexities behind the industry, the nuances of energy policy and planning, and the experts behind the work. This position is paid $15 per hour and will work 20 hours per week. Applications will be open from July 18 - July 31. Hybrid/telework options are available.

The Energy Pathways Intern will support OED through the following tasks:

  • Support research and data collection/analysis
  • Draft educational and communications materials
  • Support coordination, reporting, and facilitation of SEP
  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of OED events
  • Attend and report on partner events
  • Assist on research/white papers
  • Communications/website updates and support
  • Legislative tracking and coordination
  • Scholarship marketing support
  • Support for the Renewable Energy Systems Tax Credit (RESTC) incentive program
  • Other duties as assigned

This internship provides opportunities to:

  • Learn about civil service and policy

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Graduated or anticipated graduation from an institution of higher education between May 2020 - May 2024
  • Desire to learn about and understand the complexities of the energy industry at the state level
  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills
  • An ability to work independently, multitask, and take ownership over projects and assignments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working as part of a team

Where will you intern? OED’s office is based in downtown Salt Lake City, UT. At this time, we anticipate a hybrid/telework format for internships.

Are the internships full-time or part-time? Part-time. Internships are customized to individual interns’ schedules. Interns will work with OED 20 hours per week for up to 4 months.

Is this a paid program? Yes, OED interns are paid $15 per hour.
