Startup Group is seeking an intern to write stories about the exciting world of Provo's Startup environment. The goal is to produce a series of articles that will be shared via Provo City Communications channels. The Daily Herald has also agreed to a regular publication of these stories.

Startup Group is housed in the Startup Building which was built by the Startup Family in the late 19th century from bricks from the old Provo Brickyard and timbers from the local mountains. Over 35 young companies now call the building home giving a new meaning to the building's old name. Startup Group also owns the Bright building, the oldest auto dealership building in Provo. It's storied past includes sales of Studebakers, Edsels, Porsche, Audi, and the site of VW Sales in PRovo from 1964-2005. It has since been converted from its automotive history to a creative space for Digital Media companies. It now houses many small companies as well as a sound stage where Parts of Olivia Rodrigo's - "drivers license" was filmed, now viewed over 400 Million times.

Provo has so many small and thriving businesses. Some small, some have grown large, all have fascinating stories to be told. We want to reveal this exciting and dynamic entrepreneurial world in a series of articles in the Daily Herald.

Sample Stories might include

  • BYU Sandbox Program - Now Based in the Startup Building to be off campus, 60 BYU Students are taking 1 academic year to create a new business
  • Chat Funnels - Web based company that started in a co-working space and has grown to a robust young company of 50 folks.
  • Thread Wallets - Small cool company that started in Provo, they have moved and grown, but have stayed in Provo, just bought a building on Center Street
  • 1 Million Cups - An Organization that is sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation, Started 10 years ago through a collaboration of Private Business and City interest. A weekly meeting for entrepreneurs.
