Legislative and Policy Intern


Spend the summer working with Grand Canyon Trust staff and partners on policy issues impacting the Colorado Plateau. A new presidential administration presents a dynamic time for the Trust to advance its legislative and policy work. As an intern, you’ll work alongside the legislative and policy director in researching, monitoring, tracking, and directly engaging in advocacy regarding a full suite of reforms regionally and nationally under the Biden administration. You’ll also participate internally in cross-program collaborations, and externally with allies to ensure the Trust’s strategic goals are translated into tangible legislative and regulatory reforms. What does this position entail?

You’ll work with the legislative and policy director to advocate for and support the Trust’s legislative and policy goals by:

  • Developing briefings and analyses on state and federal legislation and regulatory reforms.
  • Monitoring and tracking pending legislation in House and Senate energy and natural resources committees.
  • Assisting in meetings with congressional members and their staff.
  • Helping develop policy strategies and advocacy in a team setting.

Do you have what it takes?

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment adjusting to changing circumstances and legislative priorities.
  • Ability to self-motivate and self-direct.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
  • Adept researcher with a strong interest in policy analysis.
  • Good time-management and organizational skills, and ability to work independently.
  • Be a self-starter capable of taking responsibility for complicated, ongoing projects.

The nitty-gritty:

LOCATION?
Flagstaff, Arizona or Grand Junction, Colorado. Intern can also work from remote locations.

FOR HOW LONG?
This is a three-month internship, beginning on May 10, 2021 and ending on August 10, 2021 (start and end dates are potentially negotiable). The intern is expected to work an average of 40 hours per week for a total of 480 hours.

WHO WOULD MY SUPERVISOR BE?
Jerry Otero, the legislative and policy director, will be your supervisor and assist with projects and skills-training.

Grand Canyon Trust internships are managed by the Rising Leaders Program. Interns are expected to communicate regularly with rising leaders staff about progress and any support needed along the way.

WHAT’S THE SALARY?
$15 per hour, for a maximum of $7,200. The intern will also receive a $500 living stipend, a $250 transportation stipend, a $200 professional development stipend, and free attendance at the Uplift Climate Conference. This position is not benefits-eligible.

WHAT SUPPLIES DO I NEED?
Laptop or computer with camera and audio capabilities. Reliable internet connection. The Trust can provide tech equipment to interns for the duration of the internship.
