The Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission (JPEC) is seeking an intern to assist with the evaluation of judges and the upcoming legislative session for internship not to exceed six-months.

Located on the State Capitol Complex, JPEC uses surveys, courtroom observation, and other data collection efforts to evaluate the performance of judges for voters. It is now completing evaluations for judges who are eligible for the ballot in 2022. Completed evaluations will be reviewed by commissioners in an intensive, six-month deliberative process. Interns will help prepare reports for review, complete data entry, and help support commission meetings, including online voting. During this same time period, the Utah Legislature will hold its 2022 General Session. The intern will help to track relevant legislation, attend hearings, and may assist with document preparation.

By participating in the internship, the intern will gain:

  • Knowledge of the judiciary and the evaluation process for Utah judges,
  • Experience in performance evaluations,
  • Skills in Salesforce,
  • Data management and some qualitative analysis skills, and
  • Understanding of the legislative process, including appropriations and policy.

This intern should be prepared to work in a small team environment, be self-motivated, organized, enthusiastic, and possess good communication skills (both oral and written). Precision and detail orientation are critical, and the intern must be able keep information confidential, as required by state law. Hours are flexible (to accommodate school and holidays) and can mostly be performed remotely, if desired. Commission meetings usually occur on Tuesday mornings.

This position can start as early as December 1 with increased flexibility during the holidays. By January 2022, the position will become 20-25 hours per week and continue into spring. $15/hour.

  • Team player
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing
  • A keen eye for detail and error correction
  • Ability to manage confidential information with care and discretion
  • Salesforce, or another CRM, and Excel skills
  • Reliable, self-motivated, organized

Utah’s Disability Law Center is seeking a qualified, self-starter to initiate a grassroots project aimed at improving the accessibility of Utah’s primary election and caucus systems. The chosen applicant will recruit, energize, and educate voters to prepare them to participate in their local caucus meetings or vote in-person during the presidential primary election. Volunteers will evaluate the accessibility of the site and the voting process, then report their observations. Qualitative and quantitative data will be compiled then a report produced.

Our program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain experience in public service and leadership. Our fellows work directly with senior advisors and cabinet members on a wide variety of initiatives. Importantly, they are given direct exposure to our legislative efforts in the spring, from initial policy drafting in January to bill review in April.
