The Church History Library is seeking a part-time processing archivist intern to arrange and describe records related to the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members. This position will assist the US/Canada Team. They are also hiring an intern for the Europe/Africa Team in the Archives and Area Support Division.
ARCHIVE INTERN
Job Position
This paid internship is anticipated to last one year (12 months). It is a part-time (28 hours per week) hourly, nonexempt position. The candidate must be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from (within the last 12 months), an undergraduate or graduate-degree program. Preference will be given to history/MLIS majors.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Catalog and process a variety of archival collections and materials in analog and digital formats acquired by the Church History Department
- Assist in workflow management of records from acquisitions through processing, digitization, and storage
- Review cataloging work of others
- Assist staff in training and managing missionaries and volunteers at Church headquarters in Salt Lake City and, via videoconference, the United States and Canada
Intern will learn and be exposed to:
- Archives research, acquisition of records, and processing records (workflow management) – with heavy emphasis on records processing/cataloging techniques that align with Church History Department standards
Intern will work under the direction of Church archivists and historians and will receive training and direction from them.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree (or college senior looking to graduate within 6 months) in history, library science, international studies, anthropology, religious studies, or a related field
- Basic understanding of archival research, theory, and practices (helpful)
- Self-motivated and dependable
- Detail-oriented with excellent oral, written, and editing skills
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and standards
- High degree of organizational skills, including scheduling and managing multiple projects
- Interpersonal communications skills and the ability to thrive in a team environment and individually
- Respect for confidentiality
- Respect for diversity in the workplace
- Available to work in the Church History Library (not remotely) 28 hours per week. There is flexibility in specific scheduling (especially if you are attending school), but work must be accomplished between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

AFRICA/EUROPE TEAM PAID INTERN
This paid internship is anticipated to last one year (12 months). This position is a part-time (28 hours per week), hourly, nonexempt position. The candidate must be currently enrolled in, or recently graduated from (within the last 12 months), an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Preference will be given to history/MLIS students, or those who are English majors working on an editing certificate.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Processing archival records in paper and/or electronic format acquired by the Church History Department
- Assisting in workflow management of records from acquisitions through processing, digitization, and storage
- Review cataloging work of others
- Assist staff in training and managing missionaries at headquarters and abroad
- Assist in the acquisition process as needed
Intern will learn and be exposed to:
- Archives research, acquisition of records, archival arrangement and description, and workflow management with heavy emphasis on records processing/cataloging techniques that align with Church History Department standards
- The Church History Department’s worldwide documentation program
Intern will work under the direction of Church archivists and historians and will receive training and/or day-to-day direction from them.
