Nicole Jacobsen: Wordsworth Trust Internship

"I loved being able to work behind the scenes on different exhibitions and displays, and the curatorial team is full of great mentors who made my experience great."

As an intern at the Wordsworth Trust in Grasmere, England this summer, I helped with visitor services, giving tours of Dove Cottage, one of the homes of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth, as well as working in the gift shop and at the museum desk. I received training in various aspects of museum work and was able to work with the curatorial staff on various projects, including a project transcribing Wordsworth’s wife, Mary’s letters. I loved being able to work behind the scenes on different exhibitions and displays, and the curatorial team is full of great mentors who made my experience great. Living in the Lake District was quite literally a dream come true, and the natural beauty and tranquility of Grasmere was something I’ll always remember. To anyone thinking of applying for this internship, I would recommend learning as much about it as you can before you go–it is a wonderful place to be, but you are immersed completely in a different culture and atmosphere, which could be difficult for some people. Creating close relationships with both my housemates (who all work at the Trust as well) and my supervisors made the experience very valuable to me for my future and also as a lasting memory that I will cherish.
