Wilford Woodruff Papers Editorial Team Internships

Wilford Woodruff Papers.png

The Wilford Woodruff Papers Foundation is seeking Editorial Team interns who are interested in documentary editing including the transcription of historical documents, paleography, biographical research, digital humanities, and related work.

Interns primarily use a web-based transcription program (fromthepage.com to transcribe historical documents written by or to Wilford Woodruff. After initial training, interns work primarily independently for the majority of the time each week, reporting hours weekly. A supervisor checks in with them regularly to ensure understanding of the process, answer questions, and increase understanding of the documentary editing process. Multiple members of the WWP team are available to answer questions and resolve concerns as they arise.

Interns may also participate in verification of the letters, journals, autobiographies and other materials, or biographical research. Verification involves two individuals, one reading from the digital image of the original, and the other following along in the transcription to check for errors. All verification is done over the phone or video conferencing. Each of the thousands of Wilford Woodruff documents being published on the website is first transcribed by one individual, and then verified by two different individuals. As with all historical work, transcription, verification, and biographical research can be tedious yet rewarding when one reads words of truth, humor, sincerity, or resilience penned by Wilford Woodruff or one of his correspondents.
