CLOSED Utahns Against Hunger Outreach and Policy Internship

Utahns against hunger logo

Utahns Against Hunger is offering a legislature-adjacent internship where students will engage in multiple aspects of the legislative process as they support the UAH team in pursuing policy changes and funding for local communities experiencing food scarcity.

This internship will allow students to be involved in community outreach, policy work, lobbying, public relations, project management, non-profit work, and working with underserved, at-risk communities. For additional information, please see the attached. If you work with interested students, please encourage them to email a resume and cover letter to Neil Rickard at rickard@uah.org. Timeliness is critical, so applications should be sent sooner than later.

Core projects:

  • Create an internal directory of speakers available to speak to their personal experiences of food insecurity
    • Speakers would be referred by UAH to give personal statements to:
      • Media Agencies seeking personal stories about food security topics
      • Legislative committees or other public entities receiving public comment about policies impacting food security in Utah
    • Speakers can be drawn from the general public or through UAH partner agencies
  • Create protocols for recruiting new speakers, maintaining the directory, and ensuring ethical standards for recruitment
  • Create a record of partner agencies who are potentially consistent partners

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Contributing to UAH staff-wide planning and discussions, including general legislative strategies
  • Developing materials for outreach and education in support

Opportunities for Personal Development:

  • Preparing the speakers bureau will mean developing familiarity with the many issues of policy touching on food security, including emergency food (food banks and pantries), SNAP, WIC, School Meals, and Senior programs. The position also means becoming familiar with the many organizations operating in the space.
  • The intern will be expected to join UAH for legislative work when possible
    • While most of the internship can be done remotely, this would require flexible scheduling, and the ability to travel to Salt Lake City during the session. UAH will accommodate to the extent possible.

To Apply

Email a resume and cover letter to Neil Rickard at rickard@uah.org. Applications should be sent sooner than later.
