Opportunities for Spring 2023 (Jan-April)

Reference Internship

Work with our Reference Team to help answer research questions from the public! This in-person internship works directly with our Reference & Access Program Manager to learn how to locate records in our collection and provide excellent customer service through direct contact with patrons. Additional projects include updating and creating new research guides, authoring guest blog posts, and working with state agencies and their records.

Lester Wire Project Internship

This project specific in-office/remote hybrid internship includes both processing and outreach work. Learn about Lester Wire (inventor of the traffic light) while working in-person with our processing team to inventory, organize, house, and describe records from the Utah Department of Transportation. The intern will then work remotely with our Outreach Manager to create a digital exhibit from those materials and develop a plan for promotion.

Outreach and Advocacy Internship

Work with our Outreach and Advocacy Manager to spread the word about the Utah State Archives! Projects could include connecting with educators to promote the use of primary sources, marketing and content creation, or designing a program around our volunteer transcription program. Although this internship will be virtual, we will have a one-day in-person orientation and a tour of the State Archives.

Records Retention and Appraisal Internship

Work with our Local Government team to appraise the informational value of records being created today in city government, by helping the team determine the historic value of records being created by municipal planning and zoning departments. Projects could include meeting with local government planning and zoning departments to discuss their work and resulting records, and working with the Local Government team's Records Specialists and Archivists in determining if and how those records reflect the evolution of Utah's communities. This internship would primarily be virtual, but may require some in-office visits and a one-day in-person orientation and tour of the State Archives.
