Writer and PR Coordinator Student Job

This position is for a part-time student journalistic writer in the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. The successful candidate will work with the Communications Supervisor in the Dean¿s Office for Communications & External Relations to communicate the college¿s programs, events, and successes to internal and external audiences. Responsibilities include planning and executing communications campaigns, writing journalistic articles for the college magazine and the college news site, creating copy for web pages, emails, posters, ads, newsletters, and social posts. This job is 20 hours/week.

Essential functions:

  • Search out stories in the college and interview faculty, staff, and students about research, events, and learning in the college.
  • Write journalistic articles for the magazine and website to tell the great stories in the college.
  • Develop and execute campaigns to promote college priorities to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors.
  • Edit articles and other written content to ensure it meets audience self-interests and that key messages are effectively communicated.
  • Proofread written materials to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax.
  • Verify facts, dates, and statistics in drafted articles.
  • Work with supervisor on polishing and publishing final projects.
  • Prepare press releases on upcoming college lectures, events, and news.
  • Work with supervisor to review and edit donor reports.
  • Assist with writing and publishing the college magazine.
  • Assist with college events as needed.
  • Participate in additional department projects as requested.

Required skills:

  • A strong knowledge of how to write and edit in English, and the ability to communicate well to a specific audience on behalf of a brand.
  • Be dependable, self-directed, and communicate well with others.
  • Have an aptitude for learning new things and an ability to follow through with multiple tasks quickly and with a professional demeanor.
  • Must be comfortable writing in a journalistic format and using AP Style.
  • College course experience in creative writing, journalism, public relations, or advertising is preferred.
