TechBuzz News is a leading source of technology and innovation news focused on Utah's growing startup and technology ecosystem. As a TechBuzz Intern, you'll work directly with Mark Tullis, Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder, gaining hands-on experience in technology journalism while building relationships with influential leaders across the state's business and innovation community. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in journalism, communications, public relations, business, or technology who want to develop professional reporting and interviewing skills while building an impressive portfolio of published work.

What You'll Do

Your primary responsibility will be researching, reporting, writing, and publishing feature articles focused on Utah's technology community.

You'll work directly with the Editor-in-Chief throughout the editorial process, including:

  • Learning the TechBuzz writing style, editorial standards, and best practices.
  • Researching interview subjects and their organizations.
  • Scheduling interviews with technology, business, government, and academic leaders throughout Utah.
  • Developing thoughtful interview questions.
  • Conducting primarily in-person interviews.
  • Reviewing interview transcripts and identifying the strongest narrative.
  • Writing first drafts of feature articles.
  • Collaborating with the Editor-in-Chief during the editorial review process.
  • Coordinating interviewee review and incorporating feedback.
  • Finalizing and publishing articles.

After each interview, you'll receive editorial guidance to strengthen your reporting, interviewing, and writing skills.

Community Engagement

A unique aspect of this internship is the opportunity to become immersed in Utah's technology ecosystem.

Interns are encouraged to attend community events such as:

  • Technology conferences and summits
  • Startup events
  • Grand openings and ribbon cuttings
  • The 47G Zero Gravity Summit, Domopalooza, and other major tech summits throughout the year
  • Networking events throughout Utah

While attendance at these events is optional, we strongly encourage participation because they provide valuable networking opportunities and can lead to future employment, mentorship, and professional collaborations.

Work Environment

This is a flexible hybrid internship.

Interns are welcome to work from the TechBuzz News office in South Jordan, where you'll have access to:

  • Workspace for writing and planning
  • Small conference room for meetings and interview preparation
  • Break room amenities
  • A collaborative environment with editorial support

Weekly Meetings

A mandatory 15–30 minute Zoom check-in will be held each week to review progress, answer questions, discuss upcoming assignments, and ensure clear communication. Meeting times will be scheduled around your class and work commitments whenever possible.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates are:

  • Strong writers with excellent grammar and communication skills
  • Curious and eager to learn about technology, startups, and innovation
  • Comfortable speaking with professionals and conducting interviews
  • Organized and able to manage multiple deadlines
  • Professional, dependable, and responsive
  • Able to work independently while accepting editorial feedback
  • Interested in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, business, technology, or related fields

What You'll Gain

  • One-on-one mentorship from an experienced editor
  • Published bylines and a professional journalism portfolio
  • Real-world experience covering Utah's technology industry
  • Interviewing and storytelling experience
  • Professional editing and writing coaching
  • Networking opportunities with technology, business, government, and academic leaders (dozens of past TechBuzz interns found their dream jobs through networking and interviewing tech founders from the internship)
  • Exposure to Utah's startup and innovation ecosystem
  • Experience that prepares you for careers in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, content strategy, and technology

If you're passionate about storytelling, curious about technology, and excited to meet some of Utah's most influential innovators, we'd love to hear from you.
