Our media literacy team is focused on helping our members and the general public to develop skills to become better peacemakers and good citizens. MWEG’s media literacy materials are some of the most viewed, liked, and shared content and reach more than 10k accounts per month. Our media literacy intern will assist with creating and executing our educational materials, especially on social media and in our community spaces.

JOB TASKS:

  • Give input on media literacy educational materials to be published throughout the year.
  • Attend media literacy advisory committee meetings as you are able (no more frequently than once a month).
  • Create a draft of the News Roundup weekly newsletter and submit for approval by the director of media literacy. This is typically done on Thursday afternoons/evenings, so Thursday availability is necessary.
  • Help record social media video content, including our weekly SIFT in Seconds videos.
  • As time permits, research and write short- and long-form educational content about media literacy-related topics.
  • Post media literacy content on our community spaces as needed.

Position-specific skills include:

  • Concise written communication skills.
  • Experience and comfort with creating social media content, including videos.
  • Good judgment of what news stories are relevant to MWEG’s mission and audience.
  • Ability to recognize reputable sources of information.
  • Familiarity with and willingness to learn more about media literacy topics.
  • Willingness to collaborate with others and to ask for help.

This position will require a minimum of 4-6 hours per week [if you are seeking internship credit, you will need to work 9-10 hrs/week]. Most hours are flexible, but there will be a scheduled check-in with the director of media literacy via Basecamp every week. The intern will be responsible for tracking and submitting their hours on a weekly basis.
