MWEG logo

As the media literacy intern at Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG), you will play a vital role in helping our members and the general public develop the skills necessary to become better peacemakers and citizens. MWEG’s media literacy materials are some of our most viewed and shared content, reaching more than 10,000 accounts per month. In this role, you will assist in creating and executing these educational materials, with a specific focus on driving engagement through social media and our internal community spaces.

You will report to the director of media literacy, Meredith Gardner. You will have the opportunity to research topics, curate news, and produce video content that helps our audience distinguish fact from fiction in a chaotic media landscape.

Employment Type: Internship

Compensation and Hours: $16/hour; 4-6 hours/week

Location: Remote, U.S.

About MWEG

Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit faith-based community of women dedicated to civic empowerment and engagement. Our resources prepare our members with information, training, and opportunities to become more civically engaged and to participate meaningfully in shaping the world around them.

What You’ll Do

  • Curate the news: Create a draft of the weekly news roundup newsletter and submit it for approval. (Note: This is typically done on Thursday afternoons/evenings, so Thursday availability is necessary.)
  • Create social content: Help record and produce social media video content, including our weekly "SIFT in Seconds" videos, which are typically filmed on Wednesdays or Thursdays.
  • Research and write: As time permits, research and write short- and long-form educational content regarding media literacy topics.
  • Community engagement: Post media literacy content to our community spaces as needed and provide input on educational materials to be published throughout the year.
  • Collaborate: Attend media literacy advisory committee meetings (no more than once a month) and participate in a weekly scheduled check-in via Basecamp and/or Google Meet.

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Communicator: You possess concise written communication skills and can distill complex ideas into clear messages.
  • Content creator: You have experience and comfort with creating social media content, specifically video.
  • News judgment: You have good judgment regarding which news stories are relevant to MWEG’s mission and audience, and you have the ability to recognize reputable sources of information.
  • Values aligned: You are committed to operating according to MWEG’s principles of ethical government and principles of peacemaking.
  • Learner: You have a familiarity with media literacy topics and a willingness to learn more, collaborate with others, and ask for help.

Why Join Us?

  • Work with a true grassroots organization — MWEG’s work happens from the ground up!
  • Work with a team of committed changemakers. At MWEG, we know we are doing the work of a generation!
  • Mentorship: We are committed to matching people to positions that help them extend their skills and meet their professional goals. You will receive mentorship and access to professional development.
  • Our work is impactful. This role supports the learning and engagement of MWEG members. You will see impact week by week as you cheer members along in their efforts to become civically engaged peacemakers.

Things to Know

MWEG staff and volunteers are spread all over the country and rely on technological platforms to facilitate communication. They will be given access to an MWEG Google account, including Gmail and Drive, in addition to Basecamp, an asynchronous communication platform to collaborate virtually with their team. Regular video meetings will take place via Google Meet or Zoom, with an option to call in by phone if needed.

MWEG uses remote workplace software. All employees must attend training meetings the first week of their contract to learn how to use and communicate within the Basecamp collaborative platform. All staff provide their own work device(s), which must meet minimum standards of operating system security requirements.

All staff are required to be members of MWEG and are encouraged to be personally engaged with the mission of the organization.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Schedule: This internship runs from May to August (Dates TBD). It requires a minimum of 4-6 hours per week.
  • Flexibility: Most hours are flexible, but specific availability on Wednesdays and Thursdays is required for news curation and video production.
  • Training: We provide a thorough onboarding checklist and support to help you get familiar with organizational values and technological platforms.
