This Is The Place Heritage Park (TITP) Internship Program with the Native American Village (NAV) provides educational opportunities for students interested in the living history museum profession, Native American history and culture in Utah, and supervising and managing a team, leading and evaluations of programs, etc. Interns complete projects using the resources of the NAV, university libraries, and in some cases first-hand research through interviewing. Internships are an opportunity for students to learn about the NAV’s presentations, programs, and methodologies, and to develop professionalism and other skills in the field.
A review committee made up TITP staff selects interns. 3 – 5 applicants are accepted for internships during any one-year period.

INTERNSHIP PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS
NATIVE AMERICAN VILLAGE
2601 E. Sunnyside Ave., Salt Lake City, UT 84108
Located at the mouth of Emigration Canyon This is the Place Heritage Park boasts the largest teepee in America and the only heated and air-conditioned teepee in the world. The Native American Village (NAV) sits on the east of the park and showcases cultural demonstrations from the eight tribes of Utah as well as pow wow dances. The following list provides a general overview of the ongoing work of the NAV as well as internship opportunities.
All interns will create two cultural presentations based on one of Utah’s eight tribes in Utah (to be determined by the coordinator) that will range from 5-6 minutes each in length. Interns will research using traditional academic methods, including oral history to create a teaching demonstration through song, storytelling or dance (not pow wow). Interns will create curriculum and create a training handout for the NAV team. These presentations will include some or all of the following:
- Summer Presentations
- Native American Heritage Month Presentations
- Winter Presentations (Candlelight Christmas)
- Native American Craft (tribal specific)
The finished products may be chosen for implementation in the following season.
POW WOW DANCE PRESENTATIONS
Interns who are interested in Native American pow wow dances will assist employees with daily presentations that happen five times a day. Interns must dance or be willing to learn how to dance to participate in this section of the presentation. If the intern knows how to dance any pow wow style, she/he must be willing to teach co-workers who may not know how. All NAV employees and interns must have their own dance outfit or traditional regalia.
So that they can speak fluently to guests who come through the NAV, all interns are expected to learn about the history of the eight tribes of Utah and their relation to settlers who came into present-day Utah before and after the times of the Mormon Pioneers in 1847. Trainings and training materials will be provided, but interns will create a 20-minute presentation on one particular tribe and their relations to the Mormon Pioneers using his/her own academic and indigenous research methods, to be shared at a training meeting during the corresponding season.
SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS
Interns will conduct research in conjunction with Utah’s core state standards and will create 20-minutes presentations, training handouts that correspond, and training exercises. These presentations will be for grades 2 – 7.
The volunteer program is new this year for the NAV. Interns will work with coordinator to set up a viable and efficient program for the volunteers, which will include scheduling, measuring outcomes, and following up with volunteers’ experience and how to improve the program.
This is also the first year of the apprenticeship program at the NAV. We will have minimal participation, but one intern will assist the coordinator in following up with apprentices and their teachers (who are employees in the NAV) to measure outcomes and development of the skill(s) being learned by creating an evaluation system/document and interview processes.
INTERMOUNTAIN ALL-WOMEN HOOP DANCE COMPETITION
The Intermountain All-Women Hoop Dance Competition provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable experience working the coordinator of the event in support of the planning the event that includes but is not limited to assisting with contestant pre-registration and registration, organizing volunteers and volunteer training, hospitality customs as it pertains to indigenous people, tallying of points,
and hands-on interaction on the day of the event. Interns will enhance their skills in written and oral communication and learn to work in a quick and efficient manner. Students interested in event planning or community development are encouraged to apply.
